Throne of Eldraine is right around the corner, and it is bringing the commander format some incredible new cards. Today I’m going to give you my top five cards from ELD for commander, but first some honorable mentions.

The first honorable mention goes to the mythic legendary artifact cycle. They are all really cool cards that definitely have their place in the format. That being said they just don’t quite reach the level of the top five.

Next is my true love Ayara, First of Locthwain, because she’s just awesome, and because she makes my Izoni deck very happy.

My last honorable mention goes to all of the showcase cards.

Bling is definitely a big part of the commander format, and the showcase cards are quite possibly the most beautiful magic cards I have ever seen. They were brilliantly done, and they were put in draft boosters this time around. Nothing but smiles from me when it comes to these. Now, for my top five.

#5) Deafening Silence

Deafening Silence

I am fully aware that they are not popular, but hate cards are an important part of this game that we love so much. Limitations and control are a way for people to learn how to become better players if nothing else. As an enchantment it is harder to remove, and the fact that it costs one mana makes it a very strong hate piece. It actually reminds me of Ethersworn Canonist. Canonist prevents the casting of more than one non-artifact spell each turn and Deafening Silence prevents the casting of more than one non-creature spell. Very helpful against a storm style deck, or any deck that really wants to cast more than one spell per turn. I know most people won’t be, but I’m a big fan of this card.

#4) Syr Konrad, the Grim

Syr Konrad, the Grim

Syr Konrad is easily the best of the uncommon legendary cycle from this set for commander. Konrad is the ultimate aristocrat. If another creature dies, is put into the graveyard from anywhere, or if a creature leaves your graveyard, he deals a damage to each opponent. Each. Opponent. This guy is crazy. I plan on running him in my Izoni deck where I dredge, discard, reanimate, and sacrifice the over forty creatures in my deck. With Konrad the deck can generate literally hundreds of damage per opponent out of nowhere. This card is really strong, and he works quite nicely with Ayara.

#3) Hushbringer

Hushbringer

Yes. Another hate card is in the top five. This card easily has my favorite art in the set, and on top of that it is probably the most powerful hate card we have gotten in a very long time. The prevention of enter the battlefield abilities is one we have seen before, but preventing dying triggers is absolutely crazy. This shuts down value and recursion decks like Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Muldrotha, the Gravetide. This card is very strong, I would definitely keep a close eye on it.

#2) Arcane Signet

Arcane Signet

This is probably the best two mana rock of its kind. It is obviously not Grim Monolith, but this card it powerful. It is better than the signets and the talisman cycle. It enters and can tap for any color of mana in your commander’s identity, without filtering and without dealing damage to its controller. This card is good, strong, and will be a staple of every commander deck.

Before getting to the top card, I want to say that the top two should probably be the other way around. The reason they are no though is because of the top cards similarity to a very powerful card that has yet to be reprinted. Let’s keep going.

#1) Faeburrow Elder

Faeburrow Elder

Faeburrow Elder is the top card not only because it is powerful, but also because it is very similar to another very powerful card that commands a fifty dollar price tag and has yet to be reprinted. That card is Bloomtender. The exact same card except it costs one less white mana and has fixed power. Having a mana dork that can tap for up to five different colors of mana in one go is really strong. Bloomtender sees cEDH play, and while Faeburrow Elder might not, being similar as it is, I would be very surprised to not see this card start popping up all over the place.

Those are my top five cards for commander from Throne of Eldraine. Do you think I missed a super powerful card that’s deserves to make the list? What are your favorite cards? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time.
